The starting point for my current work (the past 2 years) is a collection of photographs taken by my parents of their expanding mid-western family of 3 boys and 3 girls. I am the oldest and the first 5 are spaced about a year apart so there is sometimes a stair step type of picture.
Usually we know a photograph is being taken and we are posing. This eye contact becomes in the painting an effort for establishing contact with the viewer. We are often off-balance in our surroundings and not completely self-assured.
I now long for this simpler time instead of today’s explosive fast-paced global inflationary mad world of war on terror, endless new technologies to frustrate and confuse, and further instant changes to deal with or be left further behind.
I am expressionistic and not slavish to detail and look for opportunities to play with the elements of art --- repetition of shapes, the breaking through of the two-dimensional surface to create space, the contrast of hues, and a sense of rhythm to establish for the viewer to enjoy the painting on several levels.
I also have done some printmaking images of the Family.

I think that making art is about finding out a subject matter that you are interested in, that you desire to pursue, and then using the opportunity to deal with the problems of art like composition, palettes, lines and shapes, and get in there and kick up some dust in the artistic ground that other artists have trampled on.
